Shadow feels like they tried to double down on the classic TR influence but had no idea how to elegantly include them in the game and then had basically abandoned all of the strong elements they'd established in TR2013. Rise fixes a lot of the problems with 2013 at first glance with way more exploration and puzzles, but the writing drags it down so much, along with the less interesting areas/art direction, and the end of the game is basically just the same as the end of 2013.

It had spark, fire, and was still pretty fun to play with all its issues, and the story wasn't aggressively terrible (and I even really liked Sam!). TR2013 was missing a lot of core Tomb Raider identity but at least it had its own sense of self.

The reboot trilogy just got worse as it went on. Shadow was the only main line TR game I didn't even bother to finish. Constantly reverting back to highly populated places, filled with tedious and horrible side quests, kills the sense of outward adventure and exploration immensely. Most of the time I was just wandering around picking up garbage to make numbers go up.Īlso expanding on the city/town like hubs from Rise was a total misfire. Plus, combat is devalued and relegated to such a small part of the game it baffled me as to why they even bothered with so many skill trees and upgrades when it was all meaningless. The Environment like the earlier game excelled at. The story and characters are way too intrusive while also being obnoxious, for the game to ever feel like it's just Lara vs.

The increase in puzzles and platforming is welcome, but most of the puzzles aren't that great and the pacing has no sense of momentum or agency. Lara is still a wet blanket, lacking all charisma as she's breathlessly shoved from one set piece to the next.
